Where a standard exercise book is built for cost and light use, a hard cover book is the better choice for subjects that need the same book for an entire term or year — language journals, project books, or any subject where pages need to stay intact and bound from the first page to the last. The reinforced cover and stitched or glued binding hold up far better under daily wear than a soft cover equivalent.

Page count matters here more than with exercise books — since hard cover books are meant to last longer, getting the page count right up front avoids running out partway through a term.
